Kirby Smart predicted, he understands Georgia’s heavy football attrition, don’t panic

Athens – There is no panic in the football building in Georgia, and certainly no surprises.

Coach Kirby Smart has said many times that part of acquiring elite talent is inevitably so many players declaring themselves eligible for the NFL draft as a lower-tier, particularly with many starting their careers early.

Thus, Travon Walker and Nacube Dean were expected to give up their early years, and Louis Seine (round two or three) was likely to leave on day two, early.

All of those announcements came Friday, along with the news that George Pickens’ potential first-round pick in the NFL has already been declared eligible for the 2022 draft, DawgNation first reported Thursday night.

The four talented students join a group of nine departing seniors, eight of whom have already accepted the invitations to the Senior Bowl.

Zamir White made his decision to leave on Friday and is likely to receive an invitation to the All-Star Game, if not the Senior Bowl, perhaps the Shrine East-West game.

Smart also said last Tuesday, the morning after the Bulldogs beat Alabama 33-18 in the CFP Championship game, that players will be leaving and some will go to the transfer gate.

“We’re going to have many more kids,” Smart said. “Go into the gate we had discussions with which brought it to a halt, out of respect for the team.”

“I thought that was phenomenal. We would have that. Everyone would think this was a terrible thing. But in some cases it’s a good opportunity for the kids.”

In fact, with no COVID-19 allowances in place, teams are expected to have to revert to 85 players for scholarships.

This is a balancing act for Georgia, which Smart said has “16 or 17” early adopters on scholarship and on campus.

Bulldogs are expected to see further attrition this weekend.

This list in the portal, at the moment, includes:

• CB Galen Kemper

• CP Amir Speed

• CB Luvacia Carroll

• DB Latavious Worry

• WR Justin Robinson

• WR Jaylen Johnson

Smart and Georgia were energetic, albeit very selective, they chatted with the guys in the gate as well.

“I know people don’t get it, but the other teams are 10 days ahead of you because they finished on January 1, your competition,” Smart said. “And you going, wait, what are they doing? We’re trying to win a national championship.”

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett is among those who may or may not return with the Bulldogs. Bennett said he would only return if he could “trust the decisions that were made” by Smart and the coaching staff at UGA.
